Do Adolescent Callous-Unemotional Traits and Conduct Disorder Necessarily Overlap? The Case of Adoptees Exposed to Severe Early Deprivation

چکیده
Background: There is a debate over whether disruptive behaviour should be regarded as a central component of, or rather as an epiphenomenon with little diagnostic value for, psychopathy. Aims: To test whether callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct disorder (CD) can be dissociated in the English and Romanian Adoptee Study, a prospective-longitudinal study of adopted individuals with a history of severe early institutional deprivation. Method: The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment was used to establish DSM-IV diagnoses for CD (and also ODD) at the 15 year follow-up stage. The Inventory of CallousUnemotional traits questionnaire was administered to assess psychopathy traits. Results: There was no significant association between CU traits and CD, both according to parent and youth self-report assessed categorically and dimensionally after controlling for confounds. Conclusions: The majority of individuals with high CU traits did not show CD in this special sample of children. Supporting the view, that while common, an overlap between these aspects of psychopathology is not inevitable and so providing evidence for the dissociation of these two concepts. In terms of classification, we argue for a diagnostic scheme where psychopathy can be diagnosed independently of CD.

Aetiology of the relationship between callous-unemotional traits and conduct problems in childhood.
BACKGROUND A callous and unemotional disposition is an indicator of early-onset antisocial behaviour. AIMS To investigate the extent to which genetic influences contribute to the overlap between callous-unemotional traits and conduct problems in a large population sample of 7-year-old twins. METHOD Teachers provided ratings of callous-unemotional traits and conduct problems for 3434 twin pa...
متن کاملStability Subtypes of Callous–Unemotional Traits and Conduct Disorder Symptoms and Their Correlates
Callous-unemotional traits and conduct disorder symptoms tend to co-occur across development, with existing evidence pointing to individual differences in the co-development of these problems. The current study identified groups of at risk adolescents showing stable (i.e., high on both conduct disorder and callous-unemotional symptoms, high only on either callous-unemotional or conduct disorder...

Children with conduct disorder and callous–unemotional traits present with persistent and violent patterns of antisocial behaviour. Callous–unemotional traits, such as limited empathy, guilt and shallow affect, are currently being considered as a subtyping index for conduct disorder in DSM-5, and may have independent diagnostic value, even in the absence of conduct disorder. Much attention has ...
متن کاملHigh-Quality Foster Care Mitigates Callous-Unemotional Traits Following Early Deprivation in Boys: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
OBJECTIVE Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in childhood are a developmental precursor to psychopathy, yet the origins and etiology of CU traits are not known. We examined CU traits among 12-year-old children exposed to severe early deprivation and evaluated whether a high-quality foster care intervention mitigated the development of high levels of CU traits. METHOD Participants were from the B...
متن کاملHeritable and Nonheritable Pathways to Early Callous-Unemotional Behaviors.
OBJECTIVE Callous-unemotional behaviors in early childhood signal higher risk for trajectories of antisocial behavior and callous-unemotional traits that culminate in later diagnoses of conduct disorder, antisocial personality disorder, and psychopathy. Studies demonstrate high heritability of callous-unemotional traits, but little research has examined specific heritable pathways to early call...
